Interview With Joseph Mazzello
About The Lost Word

The following interview took place on December 18, 1996.

Joseph Mazzello Fan Page: So what happened at Lost World?
Joseph Mazzello: Uh, nothing much. We were there the first day, and it was raining, so all I did was basically go to school for four hours. I had lunch, and saw Steven Spielberg and Jeff Goldblum. And then we went home. It was really boring there the first day. The thing was I wasn't doing much for the whole shoot on both days. The second day I did the two hours of school I had to do, and then I hung around and played cards with Ariana's sister because she came in later than me, so she still had to go to school.
JMFP: Yeah.
JM: Let's see. I went on set and saw Richard Attenborough. That was great. Then I did the scene which was really easy. All I had to do was run down the stairs and hug Jeff and - sounds kind of familiar, huh?
(laughter)
JMFP: This time you come down the stairs, instead?
JM: And like (speaking in the pitch his voice had in 1993) "Grandpa!"
JMFP: You didn't say that this time, though?
JM: No. They were they were saying, "Yeah call him uncle Ian." I'm like, (spoken quickly and pointedly), "No."
(laughter)
JMFP: Really? You wouldn't do that?
JM: Well they were saying, "You're going to say hello to uncle Ian." I'm like, "I don't have to say uncle Ian, do I?" They're like, "No, just call him Dr. Malcolm."
JMFP: Yeah, but were they actually considering you calling him Doctor - I mean Uncle Ian?
JM: I don't think so. But they used that term an awful lot.
JMFP: Oh really?
JM: Yeah.
JMFP: What was your line?
JM: I had a couple lines. I said, "Dr. Malcolm!" Then I ran down the stairs. And I said, "It's so great to see you," and, "Didja - you came to see Grandpa?" Those were the three lines.
JMFP: Did they try to get you to do your voice so you sounded like you did in the first film or anything or what?
JM: No.
JMFP: Okay. Were all of those lines in the script or did you ad-lib any?
JM: I ad-libbed like the first two lines, but just a little bit.
JMFP: And where were you shooting?
JM: Pasadena.
JMFP: Was it in an old house or something?
JM: It was this Catholic school, and it was huge. It was a Catholic high school. Really big. But we couldn't enjoy it because it was raining the whole time.
JMFP: Were you shooting on the inside or the outside?
JM: Inside.
JMFP: That was lucky, huh? Was it originally supposed to be outside?
JM: No, it was supposed to be inside.
JMFP: Boy, they lucked out then.
