JOE SOON TO GRADUATE FROM USC

FILM CAMP

JOE'S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT

We have a lot of fun and exciting announcements to make this time. But first we'll address the age old questions. "Joseph or Joe?" The answer is "Joseph" is his official name, so that's how it appears in credits and on the Official Joseph Mazzello Fan Page. He introduces himself as "Joe" however and it's what everybody calls him, so we have decided to do the same.

We're adding a Fan Club Update Archive to the Official Joseph Mazzello Fan Page. It will have this update and all future updates and some day will contain every fan club update ever sent out. It will also contain notations, corrections, reflections and updates made by fan club officers past and present as well as Joe and his family.

One more note, whenever you see a statement in quotes, unless otherwise states, it's something Joe said, except of course for movie titles.

JOE SOON TO GRADUATE FROM USC

Joe is just nine credits away from graduating from the University of Southern California (USC). In December he will officially receive his Bachelors of Arts Degree in Cinema/Television. When asked how working under such great directors as Steven Spielberg and Sir Richard Attenborough helped prepare him for USC, Joe said "They inspired me in a general sense in their passion and talent. I am going to have to find my own style to really become successful and I think that I have." Joe has learned a lot since entering USC in August of 2001. "I learned how to work with other people to get a movie done, how things work on the other side of the camera and that you need to always be good to the people around you because they may be there to help you get started later."

Joe's USC films will be available for download soon on the Official Joseph Mazzello Fan Page.

FILM CAMP

Joe spent July 25th through August 8th in Malibu, California at the Digital Performing Arts Camp. As a mentor/camp counselor, Joe oversaw a group of campers age 14 to 17 learning the art of film making. "We made two five minute movies, both comedies, called 'The Cast' and 'Tracking Tracy'. 'The Cast' was about two people in body casts who fall in love. 'Tracking Tracy' was about a guy who is trying to catch up with this girl who jogs all the time so he can ask her out but he is too slow and has to find a way to catch her." Some of the campers recognized Joe immediately. By the end of the first day everyone in the camp knew who he was. "Some people were really surprised and excited and couldn't believe it. They made me watch Jurassic Park with them on the last day and give an actors commentary for my scenes." In addition to film making there were lots of the standard summer camp activities. "We played a lot of volleyball and it got really intense because the counselors would pick the teams and we would face each other in a round robin style match-up. We won 11 in a row and quickly became hated. We were the Yankees of film nerd camp volleyball." Joe had a lot of fun and plans to keep in touch with the campers from his group.

"The Cast" and "Tracking Tracy" will soon be available for download from the Official Joseph Mazzello Fan Page.

JOE'S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT

Joe has began pre-production on the short film "Matters of Life and Death". He wrote the screenplay and will direct and star in the film. The film is a drama which focuses on the different ways people deal with death. "I'm making the film first and foremost because I love and believe in the story. I think it could be really powerful as long as I don't screw it up. I hope to use it to showcase my ability as a director. There is a lot of me and my family in the characters but there is also a lot that I took liberty with." The copyrights of films made by students at USC belong to the University. That limits where the film makers can get the films shown and how they're eventually distributed. There's also a certain amount of control USC will exert over the production of film made by students. "The story is important to me. That's why I'm making this film outside of USC. I want to own the film and have control over how it is made. I want it to be more than a student film. I want to make it right."

Joe is really enthusiastic about "Matters of Life and Death" and wants to address all of you directly about it. So tomorrow we'll be forwarding all the fan club members an email from Joe.

Thanks for reading and have a great day. The Official Joseph Mazzello Fan Club
